For Tawatchai “Boy” Sakdikul and Ploytabtim “Ploy” Suksang, landscape design begins with the rhythms of domestic life. Through Gingganbai, the practice they founded in 2007, the pair have helped give pared-back contemporary gardens a distinctive place in Thailand’s design vocabulary.

Their creative partnership reaches back to high school, when a shared interest in art eventually led both towards architecture. Boy saw the discipline as a way to translate his fascination with drawing into built environments, while Ploy’s childhood in northern Thailand immersed her in the region’s artistic and cultural traditions.

After gaining experience at separate design practices, they began collaborating on garden projects and entering competitions. Growing recognition encouraged them to establish Gingganbai at a time when minimalist modern landscaping remained relatively unfamiliar in Thailand.

Their gardens are conceived as considered extensions of the home rather than decorative surroundings. Planting, architecture and open space are balanced around the ways people actually move, gather and rest, with restraint allowing proportion and material relationships to come forward.

International recognition followed at the 2021 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where Gingganbai received a Silver-Gilt Medal – the only Thai landscape design to earn that distinction that year. The accolade marked an important milestone, but the practice’s strength remains grounded in everyday experience: carefully resolved outdoor spaces that make contemporary living feel calmer, more connected and complete.
