Manita Songserm

Graphic designer and typographer

Manita Songserm sees typography not simply as language, but as raw visual material. Letters become shapes, structures and compositional elements in a practice that moves fluently between graphic design and contemporary art.

The Bangkok-based designer began her career in 2013 at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, working with the exhibition team at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre to create exhibition graphics while encountering artists and creative disciplines from across the cultural spectrum. That formative experience continues to inform her willingness to test where graphic design belongs and what it can achieve.

Manita is particularly known for her unconventional book covers and Typewriter project, in which text becomes a medium for visual investigation. Geometric forms, digital processes and carefully ordered compositions sometimes evoke the logic of scientific diagrams, yet her work resists feeling rigid. Precision provides the framework; experimentation introduces the unexpected.

Her interest lies in what happens when typography is released from its conventional communicative role. By altering the scale, arrangement and relationship of letterforms, she allows familiar characters to acquire new visual identities and change the atmosphere of an image.

Since joining the Alliance Graphique Internationale in 2019, Manita has continued to develop this distinctive language through commissioned projects and independent work. The result is a practice defined by disciplined curiosity – one that treats graphic design not as a fixed category, but as an open field for inquiry.
