For Thida Plitpholkarnpim, watching a film has never been a purely passive experience. Across decades as a critic, editor and cultural advocate, she has worked to make cinema a place where ideas circulate, perspectives meet and audiences encounter stories beyond the mainstream.

As former editor of Bioscope magazine, Thida helped foster a more engaged culture of film criticism in Thailand, with the publication becoming an important reference point for cinephiles and a forum for deeper conversations around cinema and culture. She later founded Documentary Club, creating another bridge between international filmmakers and Thai audiences through documentaries and independent films rarely found in conventional programming.

The initiative has grown beyond distribution and screenings. Doc Club & Pub created a physical home for films, discussions and community engagement, while Thida’s involvement in Bangkok’s festival scene has further supported platforms giving space to diverse cinematic voices.

Underlying these ventures is her belief in film as a form of cultural dialogue. Her advocacy has brought cinema into conversations around society, democracy and human rights, demonstrating how the screen can illuminate questions extending far beyond filmmaking itself.

Through curation, criticism and community-building, Thida has helped broaden what moviegoing can mean in Thailand: not simply entertainment, but an invitation to look again, listen differently and share the conversation.
