The Grand Royal Barge Procession takes place on 9 November, transforming the Chao Phraya River into a display of Thai royal heritage.
Glistening with reflections of gold and colourful gems, the Chao Phraya River will become the stage for The Grand Royal Barge Procession. Visitors and the public should not miss the chance to catch a glimpse of this magnificent parade of 52 royal barges, manned by 2,200 Royal Thai Navy personnel – a rare chance to see Thai history and craftsmanship in full splendour.
Arranged into five columns and three lines, the fleet will form a synchronised float of approximately 1,280 metres long and 90 metres wide.
Making its way along the Chao Phraya River towards Wat Arun Ratchawararam for the Royal Kathin Ceremony – an annual Buddhist merit-making tradition following the end of Buddhist Lent – The Grand Royal Barge Procession is a centuries-old tradition reserved specifically for significant royal and religious occasions.
The display brings together naval precision, Thai ceremonial protocol and meticulous craftsmanship, offering the public a rare opportunity to witness the Kingdom’s royal heritage and a treasured tradition passed down through generations for 700 years.
This year, The Grand Royal Barge Procession will be held as part of the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana’s 48th birthday. During the ceremony, His Majesty the King will present Kathin robes to the monks in Her Majesty’s honour.
Intricate details, embellished with gold and glass gems, the four principal royal barges are among the most magnificent highlights of the procession, gliding gracefully along the river in a spectacular display of Thai artistry and royal grandeur.
Each with its own details and story, the Suphannahong Royal Barge, the Anantanakkharat Royal Barge, the Anekchatbhuchong Royal Barge and the Narai Song Suban Royal Barge embody Thai history, royal tradition and masterful craftsmanship, offering a glimpse into the artistic legacy that has been preserved through generations.
Serving as the pavilion barge, a barge for Their Majesties the King and Queen to travel on during the procession, the Suphannahong Royal Barge has a long history dating back to the Ayutthaya period. With the present model completed during the reign of King Rama VI in 1911, this royal barge is distinguished by its magnificent golden swan figurehead with intricate carvings.
Featuring a striking figurehead depicting Phaya Anantanakkharat or the serpent king, the Anantanakkharat Royal Barge is adorned with colourful embellished glass mosaics. The barge has a special ceremonial role, carrying the Royal Kathin robes during the procession.
Unlike the others, the Anekchatbhuchong Royal Barge features an elaborate prow adorned with intricate colour glass carvings of many mythical serpents. This barge is reserved for members of the royal family.
Built during the reign of King Rama IX to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty’s accession to the throne, the Narai Song Suban Royal Barge’s figurehead depicts the Hindu deity Narai standing upon the Garuda, the mythical half-man, half-bird creature. The deities symbolise protection and divine power.
On 9 November, the royal barges depart at 3PM from Wasukri Pier and continue along the Chao Phraya River to Wat Arun Ratchawararam. The procession route will pass Bangkok landmarks including Phra Sumen Fort, Krung Thon Bridge, Rama VIII Bridge, Somdet Phra Pinklao Bridge, Siriraj Hospital, the Grand Palace and the Royal Thai Navy Auditorium.
Visitors can catch this spectacular sight from designated viewing areas along both banks of the Chao Phraya River. For the best experience, arrive early to secure a good viewing spot. Remember to bring essentials such as drinking water, sunglasses, a hat and an umbrella to stay comfortable while waiting and throughout the procession. Most importantly, have your camera ready to capture this rare display of Thailand’s royal splendour!
