Are we in the rainy season right now or has the clock turned back to April? It has been a scorching hot May in Bangkok so far—so much so that I have truly considered wearing only swimwear for the timebeing.
If you’re feeling the heat too and are all ears for the latest standouts in swimwear, here are our hottest picks at the moment.
Angelys Balek truly makes swimwear for every woman. Whether you’re into showing skin or more modest with both silhouettes and colour, the Spring Summer 2021 collection manages to provide a great range while still telling a cohesive story. The collection, named Baby Icing, is inspired by cake and its ingredients. You’ll find this translated in the Swarovski beadwork on a few of the pieces—meant to be reminiscent of sprinkles—or the fun choices of colours like Tangerine Tango and Green Jelly Bean. There’s also a touch of vintage in the collection with high waisted bottoms and puff sleeves.
Everlane is an American brand that’s hard not to love. On the surface, the brand looks made for the modern woman. Neutralised colours like navy, olive green, brown and mustard yellow compliment every skin tone. Silhouettes are minimalistic, classic and timeless, and sizes are inclusive. But the brand goes much deeper than that for the modern consumer. Everlane prides itself on the “radical transparency” of where their clothes come from and how they affect the environment. One career that probably lends good insight into swimwear is that of a Victoria’s Secret Angel. Tropic of C is the swimwear brand of Candice Swanepoel, and you can count on the South African supermodel to understand sexy. Offering numerous variations of the itty bitty bikini, Tropic of C also makes a charming statement with knit style swimwear.
As a homegrown brand, Aprilpoolday has come a long way from its humble beginnings, garnering cult status amongst beachgoers in Thailand and now shipping worldwide. Favoured for its retro silhouettes, Aprilpoolday’s latest big hit (as evidenced by the number of appearances on my social media feed) is the one-piece ‘breakfast club’ design. A halter-top swimsuit with polo styled collar and button details, the ‘breakfast club’, offered in two colourways, is the perfect piece for making your beach trip look like the good ole days.
For ladies who love the freedom of a high cut, Gnash is for you. This Aussie swimwear has long been a champion of the high cut, keeping them fresh with new designs season after season. Although Gnash bikinis are always killer, lately we’ve been obsessed with their new ‘string one piece’, which lets you ruche the sides of the swimsuit to show as much hip as you want.
What is it about cult Thai swimsuit brands and names that omit spaces? If you’re not already a follower, Waterandothers is definitely another one to watch. A marriage of retro and modern, find solid coloured basics that can be mixed and matched, statement one-pieces and some fun checkered patterned pieces. Also, their Instagram feed makes a compelling case for gathering your girl gang and shopping together.
If you want to turn heads at the beach and look like no one else, check out Attico’s beachwear line. An established fashion brand, Attico has translated their fun and edgy sense of style into their new swimwear collection. Whether it’s bikinis with a (literal) twist or metallic one pieces that make you look out of this world, Attico’s swimsuits bring the runway to the beach.
For ladies who feel most confident in black and white, Anemos swimsuits are the equivalent of the LBD (little black dress)--that is, simple and utterly sophisticated. Anemos is so clever with design, you might end up putting several black swimsuits in your virtual shopping basket, and they’ll all be righteous purchases.
Made in Italy, Fisch’s swimwear not only reminds one of the spirit of the sea with its colours and patterns, they’re also made from nylon that’s been completely regenerated from discarded fishing nets—which, if you didn’t already know, makes up most of our ocean’s plastic pollution. Show your solidarity with the oceans by wearing Fisch to the beach!
Branded as "modern nostalgia", this Bangkok-based swimwear brand will give you a blast from the past with its new Peggy one-piece design. Highlighting a flower-power cut-out in the front, this halter-style swimsuit balances the cute with a sexy deep cut. Peggy is available in several colour combos, so choose your character wisely.
