Adidas joins the likes of Stella McCartney and Hermes in embracing a new mushroom-based leather alternative known as Mylo with the upcoming release of Stan Smith Mylo. In case you haven’t already heard about this cutting-edge innovation, Mylo is an entirely biodegradable, vegan leather made from the vegetative part of a fungus, developed by biotech firm BoltThreads. Mylo looks and feels just like leather but is much more ethically and sustainably sourced. With the Stan Smith Mylo, Adidas is tapping into the opportunity of creating the first-ever Mylo-based shoe. The Stan Smith Mylo features a brown rubber midsole, while the upper portion will be made from Mylo, presenting a warm, cream-hued body instead of the usual Stan Smith’s titanium white leather.
First launched in 1965, Stan Smith has been one of Adidas’s most popular sneakers. The minimalistic, clean design with white leather has always marked the shoes’ iconicism. Throughout the years, Stan Smiths have trailed away from their original tennis shoe purposes, developing into more of a lifestyle staple.
Following the Stan Smith Primegreen, which comes with an upper region made with 50 per cent recycled materials, the Mylo is the next sustainable iteration of this classic footwear. It will certainly reflect the brand’s commitment to ending plastic waste.
While we wait for an official release date for the Stan Smith Mylo, you can explore more at adidas.com/stansmithmylo.
