For more than four decades, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook has worked where art, literature and lived experience meet – and sometimes collide. Trained in graphic art at Silpakorn University, she later studied in Germany, where an engagement with conceptual sculpture opened her practice beyond printmaking. Video, installation, sculpture and writing followed, each offering a different language for ideas that resist easy resolution.

Femininity remains a defining thread. Personal memory, illness and the overlooked lives of women at society’s margins become the substance of work that can feel tender and unsettling in the same breath. Dark humour often enters the frame, complicating sorrow without diminishing it. Her books are similarly difficult to categorise, moving freely between memoir, fiction, criticism and satire.

Araya’s influence also extends through education. During her long career as a professor at Chiang Mai University, she established an undergraduate programme in Multidisciplinary Art, helping to broaden how contemporary practice was understood and taught. Her own work has appeared at leading international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and documenta, and entered institutional collections across Asia and Europe.

For Araya, art and writing are not parallel careers so much as interwoven methods of inquiry: ways to approach the contradictions, vulnerabilities and occasional absurdities of being human.
