Furniture gives Anupol “Taa” Yooyuen an unusually tactile way to carry Thai culture forward. As co-founder and design director of Mobella Galleria, he brings traditional craftsmanship into contemporary interiors through an exacting focus on upholstery, form and function.

Since establishing Mobella in 1992, Taa has worked closely with skilled artisans on sofas, armchairs and custom-made furniture for Thai and international markets. Craftsmanship remains central, but his designs are not exercises in nostalgia. Thai culture, local materials and traditional techniques instead become starting points for pieces conceived for modern living.

Collections including Takraw and Ma Hin illustrate that approach particularly well. Familiar Thai references are reinterpreted through restrained details and contemporary forms, allowing cultural identity to emerge without overwhelming the object’s purpose or comfort.

Taa has also pushed upholstery beyond its conventional role through collaborations with artists, designers and local communities. These projects explore furniture as creative expression and, increasingly, as collectible design, while keeping handmade expertise firmly in view.

That balance between continuity and reinvention defines his work. By giving established skills a contemporary vocabulary, Taa has helped Thai furniture design reach a broader audience while making a quietly persuasive argument for craftsmanship itself: tradition survives most convincingly when it is not merely preserved, but put to work in new ways.
