Nawapol is a big name in both independent and mainstream film in Thailand. He founded Very Sad Pictures and Happy Ending Film companies and also works for GMM Grammy’s film studio subsidiary, GDH559. His first feature film 36 won New Currents award from the Busan International Film Festival 2012, while his second feature film Mary is Happy, Mary is Happy premiered at the Venice International Film Festival the following year. He feels challenged by the changes in the media for storytelling and the interests of younger audiences, but winning the Silpathorn Award 2021 for film and motion media is proof that he knows how to accommodate those changes. He is most proud of having achieved all his seemingly “delusional” goals set to paper as a high school student. He plans to move into a new area of work that is not film-based, or uses film as only one of the elements of communication. To relax, he plays the drums and watches online memes that fascinate him due to their borderless imagination. He is also a proponent of true democracy in Thailand.
