Angelina Jolie Joins Instagram With Purpose

Known for being incredibly private and with no social media presence, mega-star Angelina Jolie joins Instagram to speak out about the situation in Afghanistan

If there's one thing that'll get Angelina Jolie on Instagram, it's the opportunity to do some humanitarian work. Joining the social media platform less than 24 hours ago, the 46-year-old star's Instagram bio reads "Mom, filmmaker, Special Envoy for UN @refugees". At the time of writing, Jolie has garnered 4.9 million followers and uploaded a single post to her feed. The post, a carousel, highlights a letter recently penned by a teenage Afghan girl who expresses her fears over life under Taliban rule. In the note, the girl writes, "before Taliban came in, we all went to work, school... We all had rights." But as she moves on to describes events of recent days, she ends her letter with a harrowing conclusion: "we are imprisoned again."

Besides the post, Jolie has also activated the Stories function on Instagram, resharing a Time Magazine post that links to her own recent op-ed on the unfolding events in Afghanistan. In the piece titled The People of Afghanistan Deserve So Much Better Than This, the UN Special Envoy writes, "Giving up the idea of a peace agreement between the Afghan government and the Taliban, appearing to cut and run, and abandoning our allies and supporters in the most chaotic way imaginable, after so many years of effort and sacrifice, is a betrayal and a failure impossible to fully understand. I think of injured American servicemen and women I met at Ramstein Air Base—some who’d lost limbs fighting the Taliban— who told me how proud they felt to be a part of helping the Afghan people gain basic rights and freedoms. I think of every Afghan girl who picked up her bookbag and went to school in the last 20 years even though she risked being killed for it—as so many were."

Angelina's personal brand has long been one of humanitarianism over Hollywood fame and through personal charity and using her immense profile to raise awareness, she has indeed made a difference in areas of the world that desperately need aid.  As she now explicitly calls on her IG followers and any onlookers to join her in not turning away from what's going on in Afghanistan and in continuing to look for ways to help the people, we wonder how much of an effect her voice, or that of any other major celebrity figure, can have on the civilians of Afghanistan as the Taliban make their plans for the country known. Do celebrities have the power to do real good in the world and if so, is it their responsibility to?
