Film lovers, you won’t want to sleep on this.
Bangkok Kunsthalle invites cinemagoers to its “Sunday Cinema”, a bi-weekly screening series running from next Sunday towards the close of the year in December. The programme is curated by Rosalia Namsai Engchuan – whom some may know from her other Bangkok Kunsthalle curatorial outings like “The Future of Memory” earlier this year – with all screenings starting at 5.30pm and completely free to attend.
While the previous screening series maintained fidelity to the Left Bank cohort of the French New Wave, such as Agnès Varda and Chris Marker, this iteration is far more eclectic, though a Left Bank figure appears here too, namely Alain Resnais, who is widely praised for his examination of memory and post-war trauma in Hiroshima, Mon Amour (1959).
The lineup is seriously stacked. You can look forward to Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, who transcended Haruki Murakami’s original text in Drive My Car (2021), right alongside the phlegmatic, perennially dour Werner Herzog, whose Fitzcarraldo (1982) earned him Best Director and a Palme d’Or nomination at Cannes that year.
They are joined by Uruphong Raksasad, whose lenses capture the heart of rural Thai culture, and Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose work was recently all over Bangkok theatres. And of course, alongside a handful of other great directors, the series features Wong Kar-wai and Wim Wenders, two directors who really don’t need an introduction.
The screening schedule is detailed below:
