Nene Royal brings Southern Thai craft, Phuket heritage and Baba Peranakan details to a rock ’n’ roll look on America’s Got Talent 2026.

Nene Royal did not need a traditional Thai costume to make Thainess visible on America’s Got Talent. She needed a rock look, a guitar and a few pieces of Thai craft with something to say.

The 16 year old singer and guitarist from Phuket stepped onto the America’s Got Talent 2026 stage in black jeans, a leather vest, boots and a draped silk textile, bringing together rock attitude with details drawn from Thai textile and Baba Peranakan culture. She later received a Live Golden Buzzer from Mel B, sending her straight to the final.

From Southern Thai Samping to the AGT Stage

At the waist is a Songket Samping, a gold and brown textile rooted in the folk culture of Southern Thailand’s lower provinces and the Malay Peninsula. Its distinctive patterns and gold detailing give the fabric its signature sheen, allowing it to catch the stage lights. Traditionally worn around the waist, it can also be draped over trousers or a skirt.

Below it, a piece of Phum Mancha Khiri silk, also known as Pha Som Pak Poom, from Mancha Khiri district in Khon Kaen, is draped over her jeans. The historic ikat textile is known for its detailed patterns and long history, dating back to the Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin periods. Once associated with formal dress and court ceremonies, the textile is now rarely seen in everyday fashion.

For Nene, the silk was given a new job. Gold detailing inspired by Chinese key motifs was added to make the fabric catch the light, while metal elements help control its shape, allowing her to move, crouch and play guitar without the outfit getting in the way.

Thai Textiles Meet Leather and Batik

Her vest comes from Thai label TiTA Style and mixes leather with locally made textiles. The front uses Pha Dut Dao, handwoven by a weaving group in Nong Bua Lamphu, while the inside features Phuket batik with a Chinese key pattern. The motif carries a meaning of success and prosperity, turning what could have been a hidden lining into another small cultural message. Then comes one of the most personal details: the pin tang, an ancient local ornament and brooch from Phuket’s Baba Peranakan communities, recognisable by its convex, multi-pointed star shape.

A Pin Tang Connects Nene to Phuket

The round brooch, traditionally worn as both jewellery and a fastening, carries symbolism linked to longevity, good fortune and success. On Nene’s vest, it is paired with a chain inspired by the jewellery used to connect a brooch to the clothing of Baba men. Floral details add another layer, referencing renewal and growth. Nene is a Phuket girl performing for an international audience, so bringing a piece of Phuket’s cultural history onto that stage is a proud nod to her roots and identity.

Keeping the Look Rock ’n’ Roll

The rest of the look keeps things firmly in the present. Black zebra patterned jeans from Italian label Blumarine bring the rock edge, while black leather boots from CPS finish the silhouette. The contrast gives the Thai textiles room to stand out without turning the whole look into costume.

There is also a story behind the making of the vest. TiTA Style reportedly had only two days to turn the idea into reality. The result brings together leather, Thai weaving, Phuket batik and traditional jewellery in one piece, with input from Nene’s creative team and the people who supplied and made each element.

Nene described the concept simply: “Let’s Rock to the World.”

That is perhaps the strongest thing about this look. Thainess does not arrive here as a fixed uniform. It comes through silk, weaving, batik, jewellery and motifs, then gets thrown into the mix with denim, leather and rock music.

On a global stage, the message is clear. Thai craft does not have to stay in its usual setting. Give it a guitar, a pair of boots and a 16 year old who is ready to rock, and it can travel.
