Traditional fairy tales about Prince Charming are overrated anyway. Chomphunut Theatre Troupe brings a fast-paced, gender-fluid and wickedly humorous revision of Cinderella to GalileOasis on 29 August. Rooted in Lakhon Nok – a style of theatre that historically weaponised comedy against those in power – the production reframes the beloved folk tale through a satirical lens. 

 Conceived for the ‘Free Gender Music Event’ (Dontri Seree Phet), Chomphunut Theatre Troupe developed this Lakhon Nok version of Cinderella to mark Pride Month 2026 at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). The show also serves as a reunion for the troupe, who first cut their teeth entertaining fellow Chulalongkorn University students. Their name tells the story: ‘Chomphu’ nods to the university’s signature pink, while ‘Nut’ embraces gender identities beyond heteronormative labels.

This production is the troupe’s first readaptation of a Western narrative, notwithstanding its clear parallels in Thai classics. Fringe theatre possesses a singular freedom: the liberty to express oneself through body and dress – even clumsily – while challenging traditional notions of femininity. That freewheeling impulse makes the sacred mortal, laughing in the face of bureaucrats and elites whose view of art is ever so narrow. 

Performances take place at GalileOasis, Soi School Kingphet, Ratchathewi on Saturday, 29 August, featuring an afternoon show from 1pm to 2pm and an evening show from 7pm to 8pm. Tickets are priced at THB 800 and can be booked via Ticketmelon or the link in GalileOasis’s Instagram bio.
