Bjørn Karmann, a visionary designer from Denmark, has introduced a cutting-edge camera called Paragraphica. This device combines the power of location data and artificial intelligence to produce captivating “photos” that capture distinct places and moments.
Available in both physical and virtual versions, the lensless camera offers an immersive experience for users to explore its extraordinary features. When peering through the viewfinder, individuals receive a live description of their present location. By simply pressing the trigger, the camera creatively translates this description into a lively depiction, thus crafting an individualised “photo” of the scene.
To give users more control, the Paragraphica camera incorporates physical dials that resemble traditional camera controls. These dials allow users to adjust data and AI parameters, which directly affect how the generated photo looks. By using open APIs, the camera gathers information from the surroundings, such as the address, weather, time, and nearby points of interest. These data points are combined to create a descriptive paragraph that vividly represents the current location and moment.
The first dial, similar to adjusting the focal length on a camera lens, determines the search radius—in metres—for places and data within the camera’s range. The second dial, like adjusting film grain, adds a noise seed to the AI image diffusion process. The values range from 0.1 to 1, affecting the level of noise introduced. The third dial controls the guidance scale, which determines how closely the AI adheres to the paragraph. Higher values result in a sharper focus, while lower values create a blurrier interpretation of the photo. Essentially, these dials provide users with more control over the camera’s search area, image characteristics, and focus, similar to traditional camera controls.
The resulting photo captures the unique essence of the place, as interpreted by the AI model. Bjørn Karmann notes that the photos evoke familiar moods and emotions from the location but in an intriguing and slightly eerie manner, as they never exactly replicate the actual scene.
The design of Paragraphica draws inspiration from the star-nosed mole, an underground-dwelling creature that doesn’t rely on light to navigate its surroundings. This mammal uses its finger-like antennae to look into the world, granting it a unique and intelligent form of “sight.” The mole serves as a metaphor for the difficulty of understanding and empathising with different forms of intelligence and their perspectives, which may be incredibly different from our own as humans. Therefore, instead of a conventional lens, the camera prominently features a bright red antennae, symbolising this unconventional way of perceiving the world.
Karmann highlights, “As AI language models continue to evolve, we can only imagine the unique ways they will perceive the world. The camera presents an opportunity to explore the world around us, transcending visual perception alone.” He further explains, “By leveraging location data and AI image synthesis, Paragraphica offers a profound understanding of moments from the perspective of other forms of intelligence.”
