Director and writer of the Korean thriller, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, confirmed the news in an interview. “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season,” he said. “So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! There will indeed be a second season.” However, no release date or production schedule was confirmed, though season two is in the planning phases. He continued, “Gi-Hun will come back, and he will do something for the world.” Lee Jung-Jae, who plays lead Seong Gi-Hun, said to The New York Times that he’s up for a second season. “The story could go in any direction, and some of Gi-Hun’s emotions are very complicated. He’s a very intriguing character.”
Fans can expect more from the Front Man in season two. Hwang explained, “I thought about the stories that could be in season two if I got to do one—one would be the story of the Front Man. I think the issue with police officers is not just an issue in Korea. I see it on the global news that the police force can be very late on acting on things. This was an issue that I wanted to raise. Maybe in season two I can talk about this more.”
Centred around traditional Korean playground games, Squid Game has made quite a cultural impact on the world. For example, in Maastricht, the Netherlands, hundreds of people played a real-life version of the game Red Light, Green Light, organised by Netflix. The now-iconic giant doll that orchestrates this game in the show also appeared in Sydney Harbor on Halloween. A fully-functioning, 3-metre replica of the doll showed up in Westfield, Shepherd’s Bush in West London as well.
With so much demand for season two, Hwang has his work cut out for him. While we don’t know what to expect as of yet, one thing is for certain—we can stop anxiously wondering if there’ll be more Squid Game because the director said it himself: there will indeed be a second season.
