These two stories remind us that being authentic is powerful, and that showing up as your true self is worth celebrating every day.
June is a time to celebrate love, identity and the power of being true to oneself. This Pride Month we’re shining a spotlight on individuals who are proudly living their truth while building their careers and staying true to who they are. Each story is a reminder that authenticity is strength, and that being out and proud is something to be celebrated not just in June but all year long. Let’s get to know the people who are showing up, speaking out and thriving – exactly as they are.
Driving Trans Rights Across Asia-Pacific
Wannapong “Nhuun” Yodmuang is a Thai transwoman, feminist and human rights advocate shaping gender justice in Asia and the Pacific. As the Human Rights and Advocacy Manager at the Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN), she works to improve legal, policy and social conditions for trans and gender-diverse communities across the region. Her past work includes roles at Amnesty International Thailand, UNDP’s Being LGBTI in Asia, ILGA Asia and the Manushya Foundation – each deepening her commitment to trans rights through legal reform, research and strategic campaigning.
Founded in 2009, the Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN) is a regional trans-led organisation that works to advance the rights, health and wellbeing of transgender and gender-diverse people across Asia and the Pacific.
APTN is led by and for trans people and is one of the first networks in the region focused on addressing the challenges faced by trans communities. Its mission is to support and strengthen trans movements by building leadership, conducting research, shaping policy and amplifying trans voices in national, regional and international forums.
At APTN, Nhuun has helped bring trans voices to the forefront of regional and global platforms. In 2023, she spoke at the Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) hosted by UN ESCAP, calling for economic and social justice for marginalised communities. She also co-organised the United Nations Trans Advocacy Week, gathering trans leaders ahead of the Human Rights Council to build collective strategies and influence decision-making. Nhuun works to align policies and human rights efforts with regional realities and trans-led perspectives.
Through every role Nhuun brings strength and vision to the fight for trans rights, pushing for a world where trans people are safe.
Transforming Education and Empowering Trans Voices
While activism remains a cornerstone of progress for the LGBTQ+ community, it’s important to spotlight individuals who break barriers and thrive in their own spheres. One such figure is Nayada Thippayaatsawapakin, a pioneering transgender woman who has made her mark in Thailand’s education sector through the founding of BeWise Academy.
Growing up in a conservative military family, she faced discrimination and misunderstanding around her gender identity. Yet instead of allowing those experiences to deter her, Nayada used them as fuel to build something greater.
Seeing room for improvement in Thailand’s traditional education system, Nayada set out to build an institution that would encourage more critical thinking, curiosity and adaptability among students. Since opening its doors in 2009, it has grown into a tutorial school with six branches across Thailand, and is extending its reach through academic camps in Chiang Mai, Songkhla, Phuket, Rayong and Prachuap Khiri Khan. Each year, BeWise supports more than 10,000 students, helping many of them gain admission to leading universities through a more engaging and student-centred approach to learning.
Her advice to the younger generation: “I encourage you to discover what truly ignites your passion. Seek the place where your heart beats the fastest, for that’s where you’ll find your most joyful and fulfilling path.”
Beyond academics, BeWise also reflects Nayada’s commitment to inclusion. Collaborating with organisations like TransTalent Consulting Group and Sasin School of Management, the academy has supported initiatives that encourage transgender individuals to explore entrepreneurship and leadership. Through her passion for education, she nurtures personal growth and helps build a more inclusive society where everyone has the chance to shine.
