Netflix has just announced to the world that Squid Game Season 2 is coming. Last November, Hwang confirmed he was working on a new season for the show at a red-carpet celebration. The streaming platform just posted a 10-second teaser, along with a statement from its creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk. Ever since the South Korean dystopian thriller series hit screens last year, it became one of Netflix’s most popular productions.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” the director wrote. “As the writer, director and producer of Squid Game, a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.”
Hwang revealed that “the man in the suit with ddakji might be back”, which refers to the game’s recruiter. He also revealed that antagonist The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) would be returning.
Viewers will also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend Cheoul-su. In case you have forgotten, Young-hee is the name of the gigantic motion-sensing killer doll used in the “Red Light, Green Light” game in season 1.
However, we might have to wait a little longer before the games continue. “We are working on the script right now and making the form of the story,” executive producer Kim Ji-yeon tells Tudum, the official Netflix site. “But there’s definitely a lot of pressure on how to make [Season 2] even better. I know that a lot of the different fans and audiences have enjoyed the series very much, but really we’re focusing on how to make it even more joyful to the global audience.”
