Few filmmakers move between memory, dreams and reality quite like Apichatpong “Joe” Weerasethakul. Over more than three decades, the Thai director and screenwriter has created a cinematic language unmistakably his own, drawing on rural life, personal history and Buddhist philosophy while working largely beyond Thailand’s mainstream studio system.

International recognition came early. Mysterious Object at Noon (2000) received acclaim at leading international festivals, followed by Blissfully Yours (2002), which won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes in 2002, while Tropical Malady (2004) became the first Thai film selected for the festival’s main competition, receiving the Jury Prize in 2004. Then came the landmark: Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) won the Palme d’Or in 2010, the first Thai film to do so. Memoria (2021) brought another Cannes Jury Prize in 2021.

Yet the awards tell only part of the story. Joe’s importance lies in a body of work that challenges conventional narrative while remaining deeply connected to Thai experience, opening an unusually contemplative space within contemporary world cinema.

That international influence continues. In 2026, his latest project, Jenjira’s Magnificent Dream, received support from the newly launched Fondazione Prada Film Fund, while France appointed him a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
Joe has taken distinctly personal filmmaking onto the world stage without sacrificing its cultural roots – and expanded ideas of what Thai cinema can be.
