7 Liminal Spaces in and Around Bangkok That Feel Straight Out of the Backrooms Movie

Bangkok’s sun has never been brighter – she said, drenched in rain and sarcasm. We are stuck in that seasonal limbo where you are either sweating through your clothes or swimming down the pavement, but July is arriving just in time to rescue our sanity with a fresh wave of events.
Koktail Kurated has tracked down 11 unmissable ways to bridge the gap between late June and mid-July without dying of boredom. Our list has your social schedule completely hijacked, featuring everything from influencers unloading their second-hand wardrobes to a chaotic queer party masquerading as a fake sapphic wedding.
Dates & Time: 27-28 June, midday
Venue: River City Bangkok
Admission: Free
Forget clicking through endless Instagram store links; it is time to raid your favourite influencer’s wardrobe in person. Curated by pop artist and influencer Warisara “Bell” Jitpreedasakul, the Again & Again Market returns to River City Bangkok with “Whatever You Art”. Expect a massive treasure trove of curated fashion items, cute accessories and plenty of familiar faces in the crowd – last edition even saw a cameo from Italian-Thai singer Valentina “Ploy” Giardullo. Come for the clothes, stay for the clout.
Dates & Time: Now until 28 June, 2pm-11pm
Venue: Pak Khlong Talat
Admission: Free
One goes to Pak Khlong Talat to hunt down a bouquet of flowers, either to pose with for the grid or to hand over to a date – not necessarily for the fine art. But L’On Gallery is back to fill the streets with creativity yet again, offering a new edition that gets more exciting every time. With over 50 Thai and international artists painting live and flashing their brushstrokes for passersby to appreciate, this event has a real social purpose: bringing the community together. Besides, catching a live Khon performance while eating at a street stall is definitely not something you do every day.
Date & Time: 3 July, 7.30pm
Venue: Thailand Cultural Centre
Admission: Starting THB 800
Tickets via: Thaiticketmajor
The Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra is marking Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana’s birthday with a special concert dedicated to Hungarian musical mastery. The performance is split into two halves, bringing together the talents of maestro Vanich Potavanich and pianist Phu Koanantakool. Audiences will be treated to Franz Liszt’s dramatic Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor and Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major, followed by Zoltán Kodály’s whimsical Háry János Suite, which tells the story of a veteran soldier captivating villagers with his heroic adventures.
Date & Time: 4 July, 9pm
Venue: Siwilai Radical Club
Admission: THB 300 (online), THB 500 (at door)
Tickets via: Ticketmelon
Carhartt WIP continues to bridge the gap between subcultures with its upcoming event at Siwilai Radical Club in Marché Thonglor, where fashion meets the bleeding edge of Thai electronic music. Delivering the beats on a premium sound system are three DJ collectives: More Rice Records, featuring Sarayu, DOTT and Jirus; Siwilai Soundsystem, with Moodyboom, Kunanon and Jayja; and Bangkok Community Radio (BCR) Soundsystem, repped by Vell and P4. Mark your calendar for next Saturday to witness this exciting intersection of streetwear culture and underground club music.
Date & Time: 4 July, 9am-midday
Venue: ARAH at Townhall Sukhumvit
Admission: THB 1,450 (single), THB 2,700 (couple)
Tickets via: Line OA goodcha.bkk
For your average wellness enthusiast, absolutely nothing pairs better than matcha and cold plunging, which is exactly why GOODCHĀ and ARAH are back for another edition of The Cold Ritual. They are throwing everything at you: cold plunging, ice baths, saunas and onsens – you name it. But there will be plenty of matcha-whipping to look forward to as well, featuring a Special Coconut Matcha Workshop by GOODCHĀ where participants even get to take some matcha powder home. It is quite literally two of the most popular trends slammed into one.
Dates & Time: Now until 5 July, 11am-10pm
Venue: Singha Complex
Admission: Free
Moving on from wellness trends like matcha and ice baths, we have a far more comforting combination: beer and books. Truly, who knew intoxicants and knowledge could complement each other so well? It is where you can get delightfully tipsy on actual alcohol, intellectual wisdom or a curious mix of both. Aside from the brews, you can catch panels featuring authors and publishing insiders, alongside a crowd of popular BookTokers. By the end of it, you will either emerge as a massive bookworm or a newfound alcohol lover, depending on which vice wins the battle.
Date & Time: 8 July, 6pm
Venue: Sala Saneha
Admission: Starting THB 2,000
Reservations via: sala.saneha on Instagram
Few recent events feel quite as special and personal as this one. Pen-ek Ratanaruang, one of Thailand’s most celebrated directors, is bringing his latest feature film Morte Cucina to Bangkok screens following its release last year. Centred around themes of cooking and revenge, there is simply no better way to celebrate this culinary thriller than with an intimate dinner alongside the director himself. The Thai food, prepared in traditional samrub style, is genuinely to die for – though we certainly hope not literally. Come for the exceptional food and stay for the film, or indeed the other way round.
Dates: Now until 10 July
Venue: Warin Lab Contemporary
Admission: Free
Bangkok-based artist and 2020 Future Lister Nakrob Moonmanas, widely known for his distinctive collage work, has largely stepped away from the medium in his latest solo exhibition. Instead, he turns to video, sculpture, garments and objects to problematise the dichotomy between civilisation and “savagery” within the broader context of modernity. At the centre of the exhibition is a moving-image piece inspired by the classical dance-drama Sang Thong, displayed alongside works that question elite taste-making and the depiction of “uncivilised” peoples in canonical Thai literature.
Date & Time: 11 July, 8pm-2am
Venue: Tuff Bar
Admission: THB 450 (online), THB 600 (at door)
Tickets via: Google Forms
If you fancy all the chaotic fun of a marriage ceremony without any of the legal paperwork, The Lovers’ Plan is planning a wedding at Tuff Bar – only this time, it is totally fake. This one-night-only fake sapphic wedding lets you kiss under the veil, toss the bouquet and recite wedding vows purely for the vibes. Backed by plenty of booze and a booming DJ set, the event perfectly mimics a real wedding while happily smashing draconian, heterosexual decorum to pieces. It promises to be the ultimate sapphic wedding you have always wanted to crash but never had the opportunity to.
Dates & Time: 3-12 July, 6-11pm
Venue: Song Wat Road
Admission: Free
Song Wat is about to get lit, quite literally, as Awakening Song Wat returns. We all know the local art scene is formidable, but this festival is a different beast: it is packed with neon installations, projection mapping and a massive display of fireworks. The district’s stylish cafés and quaint shophouses are getting doused in colour, creating an absolute dreamscape – not a moody, rain-soaked dream from a Wong Kar-wai film particularly, but something similar, just with contemporary art and a lot more neon glow.
Dates: 17-31 July
Venue: Samyan Mitrtown
Admission: Free
Looking for late-night plans? Try catching the lantern artwork outside Samyan Mitrtown right after watching a late-night indie movie at House. It is an ideal date setup to shadow-play and create silhouettes with your loved one against the glowing art. If you catch it in the rain, the whole scene transforms into something curiously beautiful, like a frame from Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982). Under the Luminous Bloom theme, the neon backdrop might just make your date look more radiant than ever.
