Wondering where to eat when it rains? Discover 7 cosy restaurants in Bangkok and the surrounding outskirts that turn gloomy weather into a great meal.

A soggy commute can easily ruin your appetite for going out. However, a few excellent restaurants in Bangkok and its outskirts turn a depressing downpour into the perfect excuse for a comforting, elevated meal that actually tastes better because it’s raining.

This edition of Koktail Kuisine spotlights seven restaurants in and around Bangkok that thrive in the gloom. From an intimate Japanese-style kaunta seki counter seating to dining in a restored teak house, eating out during a storm has never sounded more inviting.

A Whale

Escaping the Bangkok rain is worth the trip to Samut Prakan when the destination is A Whale. The expansive, beautifully segmented venue features a wine bar, grocery café and a main dining hall dressed in comforting ocean blues and golden lighting. Here, Chef Mel Rujimora and his team focus on a simple mission: transforming high-quality local ingredients into wholesome European bistronomy dishes perfect for a wet afternoon.

From the refreshing burst of hand-peeled Chiang Mai tomato and stracciatella salad to briny mussel hummus with flatbread, the starters here set a vibrant tone. For mains, the kitchen showcases its ageing mastery with dry-aged duck breast cut with sweet pickled plum and rich jus, as well as premium steaks aged in tallow or red wine. True to its “casual fine-dining” label, the restaurant delivers excellent execution without any pretension.

Amaya Food Gallery, located within Amari Bangkok, proudly champions global flavours with its expansive all-day menu. It’s an ideal rainy-day refuge where large glass panelling floods the dining room with natural light, creating a cosy, bright escape from the stormy weather.

Guests can stroll around cooking stations to preview the day’s offerings before diving into a selection that spans from oysters on ice to a variety of grilled meats. The carving station and live sushi counter, in particular, provide a bit of theatre. On Saturdays, the restaurant hosts an evening buffet that runs from sundown until late, where crab legs and river prawns are among the highlights.

Benares

Stepping inside Benares, a modern Indian fine-dining restaurant in Sukhumvit Soi 13, you are greeted by a mix of black and gold. It feels royal but also quite modern. The main feature of the room is a neat arrangement of exposed bulbs that gives the space an amber glow, while tasselled curtains and artwork finish the look nicely.

Whether you choose a tasting menu or the à la carte selection, signature nalli gosht is the perfect comfort food on a wet afternoon. Lamb shank is slow-cooked for six hours until tender, then simmered in a rich, fragrant gravy with a touch of truffle oil. For a different experience, try the multi-course tasting menus, which include vegetarian options and mains such as dum champaran gosht.

Blue Elephant Sukhumvit

Blue Elephant is a legendary name, but while most head to the colonial-style Sathorn flagship, the Sukhumvit location delivers that same grandeur inside a restored teak house. They take heritage seriously here. Even during a rainy afternoon, the space oozes an old-world allure that makes you feel like you’ve escaped the city and been invited into a grand, faraway estate.

You can’t miss Chef Nooror Somany Steppe’s famous massaman lamb curry when it rains. It’s a thick, hot stew of tender free-range lamb with a spice blend that keeps you hooked, especially alongside a glass of Minervois red. To cut through the richness, pink pomelo salad with prawn cakes offers a bright pop of colour and flavour, mixing Nakhon Chaisri organic pomelo with deep-sea tiger prawns and Chiang Rai garlic.

ChomSindh

There’s no better place to watch the storm pass than ChomSindh, a restaurant whose very concept – freshwater and seafood delicacies inspired by family sailing trips – makes you feel right at home during a downpour. The team brings the bright flavours of their eighth-floor rooftop garden straight to your table, using homegrown herbs to cut right through the grey afternoon.

Chef Wirun “Big” Seesod relies on intense wok fire to give dishes like his grilled river prawn glass noodles their signature smoky aroma. If you visit before 30 June, you can catch the limited-time Dek Sen special, which highlights a comforting collection of noodle dishes. Be sure to also order rich crab curry with wild betel leaves and Samut Songkhram seablite or sea rosemary; its vibrant flavour comes from curry pastes that are hand-pounded daily.

Molino Bangkok

Rainy-day comfort food doesn’t always have to mean a hot bowl of broth; sometimes it comes wrapped in a house-made corn tortilla. At Molino Bangkok on Sukhumvit Soi 11, New York-native Chef Lenny Nigro channels his deep experience in Mexican kitchens into a stylish, high-energy eatery and cocktail bar. Opened in 2024, the vibrant spot boasts a relaxed, festive ambience that might make you forget the downpour outside.

These innovative Mexican-Thai fusion dishes act as the perfect fuel to outlast a storm. The menu features comforting, spicy standouts like juicy taco khao moo yang and crispy chicken larb taco lifted by brightening, fresh herbs. The tangy, chilli-lime punch of Tajín-dusted chicken bites offers an instant kick. And if the storm has you hesitant to commit fully to tacos, rich tortilla soup is the ultimate rainy-day backup, delivering deep, soul-warming flavour alongside a great crunch.

Santiaga

While a storm lashes outside, this intimate eight-seat kaunta seki counter sheds any stiff formality and becomes a cosy haven of Mexican storytelling. Sitting face-to-face with Chef Mauricio “Mau” Rosales Ungson, the vibe is entirely relaxed rather than uptight. Guests are given a culinary tour through Mexico’s most vibrant flavour maps, charting a course from mole rosa to comforting, velvety chile relleno.

Upstairs, the venue shifts into an agave-fueled lounge dedicated to a flexible à la carte experience. This floor is tailor-made for groups looking to clink signature cocktails like Rosetta between bites of smoky yellowfin tuna tacos, cheesy CDMX quesadillas and fork-tender lamb barbacoa. It’s a lively social zone where the massive premium agave lineup is just as big a draw as the kitchen.
