Exciting legends await at this centuries old Slovenian castle open to visitors year-round

Situated in central Slovenia, Predjama castle literally looks like a castle straight out of a fairytale book—or a Studio Ghibli film. This breathtaking fortress appears to be floating, standing strong within a 123-meter high cliff for more than 800 years.

Construction of the landmark began in the thirteenth century, and today it holds the title for the largest cave castle in the world (according to the Guinness Book of World Records). The tourist-friendly setting is so romantic that many couples choose it for their wedding day. The castle features a network of secret tunnels from which the knight Erazem of Predjama would set out on his plundering expeditions. Although he was known as a brave and unbeatable knight, he died on the toilet after a bloody betrayal by his servant.

After the castle was occupied by the Yugoslavian authorities in World War II, Predjama was turned into a magical museum filled with medieval artefacts. The castle has also been used as a filming venue for numerous documentaries and feature films. Visitors can walk through the castle’s armory, chapel, kitchen, and torture chamber, and explore the magic of medieval life. You’ll find a rich collection of medieval weapons and plate armors in the castle’s attic including crossbows, swords, lances, and more. Beneath the castle is a 14km-long cave system that is home to a colony of bats.

The castle is open to visitors year-round, whereas the cave is open only from June to August due to the bats’ hibernation period during the rest of the year.
