Koktail digs into why indoor races are taking over, and how staying active in Bangkok has evolved into a search for connection and self-discovery.

From 13 to 16 August, the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center plays host to the 2026 BYD Hyrox Bangkok, and the whole city is talking about it. With over 20,000 participants, the signup lists bring together everyone from local gym rats and fitness-loving celebrities to international competitors flying in just to take part. But how did a gruelling indoor fitness race become Bangkok’s latest obsession? What is the big pull behind a competition that has so many people wanting to join in?

Koktail digs into why these indoor race events have captured everyone’s attention lately. It obviously goes deeper than just trying to keep fit. This trend reflects a big shift towards collective wellbeing, where staying active becomes a way to connect, belong and feel part of something bigger. Yet it also celebrates individual achievement, giving participants a platform to conquer personal milestones and cross that finish line with pride.

What Is Hyrox, Exactly?

Hyrox started in 2017 when Christian Toetzke and Olympic hockey winner Moritz Fürste noticed regular gymgoers lacked a kind of universal fitness test. Unlike runners who had marathons, fitness fans had no big goal to train for. To fix this, they created a simple global test: eight 1 km runs, each followed by a workout station like a sledge push, rower or wall balls. Because every course worldwide is standardised, each participant can compare their times with people across the globe. Herein lies the real appeal: it is a friendly, shared challenge that brings people together through a mutual test of grit.

From its origins in Hamburg, Germany to the heart of Bangkok, Thailand, indoor fitness racing is exploding in popularity, with 2026 standing as the biggest Hyrox event the city has ever seen. The “BYD” in the headline comes from a major commercial title deal with the EV giant, which stepped in to provide backing, venue activations and marketing power aimed directly at Southeast Asia’s booming wellness crowd.

What Is in Store This Time Round?

For this edition, things kicked off on Thursday 13 August with a mix of Open categories and Doubles for both men and women running throughout the day. Friday 14 August is split evenly, dedicating the morning to the Men’s Open heats before Women’s Doubles take over the arena for the evening. Saturday 15 August brings the real crowd energy, packing in Mixed Doubles, Women’s Open heats and a full evening of high-octane team Relays. Finally, Sunday 16 August wraps up the action with Men’s Open Doubles in the morning before handing the floor over to the elite Pro divisions to close out the weekend.

Is Hyrox Part of a Broader Fitness Boom in Bangkok?

Without a doubt, yes. The enthusiasm around Hyrox reflects a city-wide shift towards health and wellness rather than a fleeting trend. This momentum was already on full display earlier this year during the open-air aerobic sessions at Lumphini Park, which attracted huge crowds and significant public attention. The movement received a welcome boost from popular figures, with NCT’s Taeyong adding to the excitement and Miss Grand Kalasin, Darathorn “Dada” Yoothong, captivating the audience with her dance moves on stage.

This mindset is also tied to a broader lifestyle shift that puts long-term well-being – what is now commonly called ‘longevity’ – above all else. Rather than being confined to older demographics, Gen Z is leading the charge, flocking to everything from weekend run clubs to community cold plunges. Fitness has effectively become the new social hour: a way to connect that bypasses the traditional night out at a bar. Sweating through a tough workout together might sound slightly uninviting initially, but it creates a fun, lasting bonding experience. On top of that, it serves as a natural networking hub, offering a casual setting to meet people you might never otherwise cross paths with during office hours.

But Why Hyrox, Specifically?

Everyone finds their own rhythm. Hyrox is certainly more demanding than a light morning jog or an easygoing group workout, but that high barrier to entry is what makes it so enticing. Participants choose not to dodge tough physical tests, but to face them head-on. Essentially, the race is less about outperforming others and more about pushing past your own mental boundaries and self-imposed constraints.

Feeling those extreme demands in real time is a humbling experience that shows you what your body is actually capable of enduring. If tracking personal metrics is about feeding the ego, the extreme fatigue at the end is about tearing it down. It creates that reflective state known so well to distance runners, where everything else drops away and leaves you with an overwhelming sense of relief when you finally finish. This highlights a different side of the shared experience: a personal, introspective element to Hyrox that resonates across every kind of sport.

What Else Makes It So Appealing?

There is something profoundly human about these Hyrox races. Whether you are a celebrity – and indeed, many Thai stars have joined in on the fun – a local gym trainer or simply someone seeking a fresh life experience, you are judged by the exact same metrics. Hyrox owes much of its growth to this accessibility and inclusivity. It levels the playing field regardless of social status, wealth or background, creating an environment where title and privilege count for nothing once you cross the starting line.

It demands the same effort, grit and determination from every single participant. By stripping away external advantages, it forces everyone to face the same physical reality side by side, en masse. That universal equaliser is what makes the experience so life-changing – and humbling – for every runner on the floor, almost like a spiritual journey. At the end of the day, we are just humans trying to see what our bodies can truly achieve, locked in a battle against physics and our own biology.
