When Colours Tell Emotions: How Wuthering Heights (2026) Uses Colour as Psychology

Art has always travelled across borders, yet not every region has moved with equal visibility.
There was a time when artists from Southeast Asia were barely seen on the global stage. Thai artists rarely appeared in major auction rooms or international collecting circles, apart from a handful of recognised names. Outside the region, understanding of Southeast Asian art remained limited, often eclipsed by more established markets.
Against this backdrop stands Christie’s. Founded in 1766, the auction house has long held a central role in the global art and luxury sphere. Each year it presents hundreds of sales across more than 80 categories, from fine art and rare objects to private transactions and online auctions, with prices that range from a few hundred dollars to works valued at over US$100 million (approximately THB 3.5 billion).
As Southeast Asia’s presence in the art market gained momentum, Christie’s opened its Thailand office in 1998. Today, one of the figures helping to widen that door opening is Prapavadee Sophonpanich, Managing Director of Christie’s Thailand, who plays a key role in promoting Southeast Asian art. Here, we take a closer look at her work and the role she plays in shaping this shift.
Prapavadee took on the role of Managing Director of Christie’s Thailand in 2018, and in recent years her remit has expanded to include Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. Her responsibility is not simply administrative. She cultivates relationships with collectors, identifies new opportunities and strengthens ties between the region and Christie’s global headquarters in Hong Kong.
Her background combines global education with practical business experience. She earned her undergraduate degree in Economics and International Relations from Tufts University, followed by a master’s degree in International Finance and Banking from Columbia University.
Her academic background gives her a solid understanding of both finance and global affairs. Training in economics and international finance supports her grasp of market trends, valuation and cross-border transactions, all relevant to the auction business. Meanwhile, her studies in international relations contribute to a broader perspective that proves useful when working with collectors, institutions and partners across Southeast Asia and other regions.
Under Prapavadee’s direction, that role has taken on greater clarity and a wider reach. In 2021, she oversaw the opening of a new gallery and office in the Ratchaprasong district, a contemporary space designed for curated previews, exhibitions and educational events throughout the year. Together with her team, she hosts programmes year-round that introduce clients to a broad selection of sale highlights in an intimate setting. The intention extends beyond presenting works for sale. It centres on building engagement with art and luxury collecting.
A key focus of her tenure has centred on placing Thai artists within Christie’s global platform. Early presentations featured works by National Artist Thawan Duchanee, a pivotal figure in Thai art history. In recent seasons, contemporary voices have stepped forward.
Part of her impact has been promoting Thai artists internationally, with their works presented in Christie’s highly regarded 20th and 21st Century Evening Sales, including renowned Thai artists such as Pratuang Emjaroen, Damrong Wong-Uparaj, Tang Chang and Thawan.

At the 20th/21st Century Asia Spring Sales 2025, Flyte by Gongkan appeared in the auction line-up, a clear sign of rising international interest in Thai contemporary art. Together, these moments reflect her role in opening wider space for Thai art within the international dialogue.
Another notable example of her approach came through a collaboration between Christie’s, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and Bangkok Art Biennale 2024. Together they presented the historical tour, an exclusive journey along the Chao Phraya River that invited special guests to experience art within the city’s historical landscape. Across four exhibition sites, participants encountered works by Thai and international artists while engaging with the stories behind them.

For Prapavadee, initiatives such as this go beyond hospitality. They reflect an effort to cultivate a new generation of collectors in Thailand through well-curated experiences. By guiding clients through festivals, galleries and museums with an informed perspective, she encourages a clearer understanding of the market and a more confident approach to collecting.
Her role now spans business development, client strategy and regional expansion. At its centre sits a clear objective: to connect Southeast Asian collectors and artists with one of the world’s most established auction houses, while encouraging a culture of considered, long-term collecting. Her efforts extend beyond Thai artists alone. She works across the region, supporting voices from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, and ensuring that Southeast Asian art as a whole gains stronger representation on the international stage. Through steady leadership and strategic direction, she has helped position Thailand and its neighbouring markets within the wider global art landscape.
Beyond Christie’s, Prapavadee also stepped into luxury property development as founder of Ideas 1606 Co., Ltd., the company behind the boutique residential brand VEYLA. There, she focuses on low-density homes designed to foster calm and reconnection. The projects combine refined design and solid construction with natural surroundings, set in peaceful locations within easy reach of urban convenience, including Cha Am and Hua Hin.
Her experience across real estate and cultural institutions reflects a consistent thread: the ability to build brands with a clear, long-term vision. She stands as an inspiring example of a woman who moves confidently across industries.
