Rather than a gloomy refuge for solitary drinking, Almost Sober Club at Neighbor Thonglor is a lively hub for curious, like-minded souls. Drenched in a deep red glow from its ceiling, the bar offers an intoxicating energy that hits the sweet spot \u2013 buzzing enough to feel alive yet mindful enough to keep your wits about you, hence almost sober. Here, the drinks match the conversational depth. Highlights include the Burnout, a tropical spin on the Negroni; the Multitasking, capped with a creamy ale foam; and the Never Enough, a clever, martini-style blend of umeshu, white spirit and vermouth.<\/p>\n\n\n

Unsurprisingly, the dialogue here tends to lean towards mid-life perspectives, ranging from workplace productivity to matters of the heart \u2013 relationships and how to sustain them. The crowd brings together people from all walks of life, including artists, podcasters and even professors (who truly put the lecture in the lecture bar) to speak openly about life’s frustrations and insights. The latest edition, EP4, tackles the evolution of loneliness, exploring how isolation has been shaped and perceived throughout history, influenced by media, urban planning and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar Thakatha at Mutual Bar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The closest you will get to a proper university seminar in a cocktail lounge, their lecture nights show that Sherlock Holmes and technofeudalism are best dissected under red neon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mutual Bar usually defaults to live music, but their ‘Bar Thakatha’ nights lean entirely into sermon territory \u2013 literally, that is what the name means, more or less. (It\u2019s a play on the Pali-Sanskrit word.) If you show up during a talk, you will be surrounded by your most academic friends under the glow of red neon and a projector screen. Yes, it\u2019s a lecture bar, but they aren’t just nerds about the drinks. The bar team reliably delivers, having previously spun out complex, Hotel California<\/em>-inspired cocktails and mocktails that completely skip the boring juices. <\/p>\n\n\n

The lineup is seriously impressive with renowned Thai professors, though the vibe usually gravitates towards the arts and humanities. You can literally sit back and take notes while the professors unpick 19th-century ethnic diversity in Sherlock Holmes, gothic tropes in sci-fi or how Big Tech’s technofeudalism is ruining society. It is unashamedly geeky, but that is the point: knowing things is finally cool again, especially when you don’t have to sit an exam at the end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Merging mixology with emotional healing, this therapeutic retreat hosts therapist-guided reflection sessions alongside role-playing game nights and tarot readings for honest self-discovery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quite literally a haven, Haven Cocktail Bar is a place you go to heal. They host Sip & Deep Talk sessions where you can sip beautiful cocktail creations while pouring your heart out, reflecting alongside therapists and consultants. It is counsel, but you simply do not turn to alcohol for an answer. Rather than a bad gateway, it is a space where you pause and become honest with yourself. Beyond psychology, the sessions invite you to reflect on love, relationship dynamics and even financial management. This is all punctuated by game nights including role-playing games and tarot nights for the more spiritually inclined.<\/p>\n\n\n

A favourite Chula student haunt where board games and casual banter about the Samyan neighbourhood quickly escalate into actual community organising <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next up is a classic Chulalongkorn student haunt. Pracha Bar was built on the ambition to drive political dialogue about urban spaces and society \u2013 hence the name Pracha, which translates to \u2018people\u2019 and heavily hints at Prachathipatai <\/em>(democracy). Perched on the second floor above a restaurant, the space switches stuffy political halls for a relaxed communal vibe where you can laze around with a book from their huge collection or play a board game. It has a completely impromptu, DIY spirit that makes it a special venue.<\/p>\n\n\n

Following a lengthy hiatus, they finally reopened on 13 June with a comeback schedule that completely justifies the wait. The venue hosts book launches and movie screenings alongside speaker panels, allowing academics and students to exchange ideas on entirely equal footing. This isn’t your standard, top-down lecture where one expert hogs the microphone. Instead, it is pure community building with a sharp political edge, focused entirely on their favourite subject: the Samyan neighbourhood. It will make you wonder if your drinking habit could accidentally start a revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perfect for working from a bar, this socket-lined nocturnal hideaway offers laptop-using night owls full connectivity alongside academic insights into prison slang and cinema\u2019s evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where some of the previous entries are defined by deep crimson, this one glows with a warm, amber hue. En Bar champions a cosy comfort that shatters the stereotype of the lonely drinking hole. In fact, remote workers are actively encouraged to set up camp, with free Wi-Fi and power sockets available throughout the room. For night owls tackling late shifts, the bar serves as an alternative to the 24-hour caf\u00e9. Instead of nursing a coffee, you sip a craft mocktail \u2013 both keep you sharp, but the atmosphere is entirely different, and anyone working the late shift knows that the right environment changes everything.<\/p>\n\n\n

Championing a mix of sapphic education and costume-heavy madness \u2013 balancing radical lectures on activism with absolute queer euphoria on the dance floor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Operating as a sapphic-centric space, Tuff Bar is the go-to Bangkok hangout for lesbians, transmascs, dolls and queer allies alike. They steer clear of performative rainbow capitalism, opting to ground their space in activism and a mission to teach the wider public about sapphic history and identity nuances. Their programming includes deep dives like their recent lecture on Thai sapphic history, which mapped out the key figures and moments of the broader movement. <\/p>\n\n\n

Less a traditional lecture and more an experimental crash course in sustainability, shaking up excess ingredients alongside R&D workshops to inspire future ‘wastelanders’ <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the name suggests, Wasteland is entirely about repurposing surplus and excess ingredients \u2013 the kind of overlooked bits that standard bars overlook \u2013 and turning them into brilliant experimental cocktails. They aren’t just playing mad scientist behind the counter either; inside, there is an actual on-site R&D lab specifically to test what works and what fails. Here, the team constantly tests the boundaries of sustainable flavours \u2013 a contrast to T.S. Eliot\u2019s famously bleak view of a broken world, as this particular wasteland is actually full of life and creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n

Taking their craft to the highest level, they host formal workshops, field trips, and lectures for a new generation of rising bartenders, affectionately dubbed “wastelanders”. Their commitment to mixology as a disciplined art form is self-evident. This passion is on full display in their newly debuted BROWSE R&D sessions, which promise a new, experimental cocktail every week for three months \u2013 totaling 12 unique creations. For anyone serious about the craft or looking for home-bartending inspiration, this is easily one of the best cocktail spots in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
