The wait is over. Thailand’s women’s volleyball team beats China 3-2 to make Olympic history and earn its first-ever Olympic spot at Los Angeles 2028. 

30 August 2026 will go down as a major date in Thai volleyball history. After years of coming close, Thailand’s women’s national volleyball team has finally secured its first-ever place at the Olympic Games, booking a ticket to Los Angeles 2028 with a 3–2 win over China in the 2026 Asian Championship final in Tianjin. It was a five-set win that turned a long-running Olympic dream into reality. 

The win capped an unbeaten tournament for Thailand, which successfully defended its Asian title and collected its fourth championship. But the trophy was only part of the story. Under the new Olympic qualification system, continental champions now have a direct route to the Games. Thailand’s Asian Championship win therefore secured its place at Los Angeles 2028, without having to go through another Olympic qualifying tournament.

The Final That Changed Everything

On Sunday, 30 August 2026, Thailand faced hosts China in the final of the AVC Volleyball Continental Championship 2026 in Tianjin, China. Two major prizes were on the line: the Asian Championship title and a direct place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The pressure was high, but Thailand stayed in the match after losing the second and third sets, then turned things around to win 3–2. The final score was 25–20, 11–25, 23–25, 25–18 and 15–9.

The win gave Thailand its fourth Asian Championship title, after previous victories in 2009, 2013 and 2023. More importantly, it secured the team’s first-ever Olympic qualification. 

How Thailand Got Its Olympic Ticket

If you do not follow volleyball, the qualification system can be a little confusing. The biggest change for Los Angeles 2028 is that there is no separate Olympic qualifying tournament. Instead, teams earn their places through several stages.

The first route is through the continental championships. Five teams will qualify as champions from five different continents. Thailand took one of those places by winning the 2026 Asian Championship.

Thailand also earns a place at the 2027 World Championship, which offers another route to the Olympics. Three of the best teams at that tournament that have not already qualified will earn Olympic places.

The final three spots will go to the highest-ranked teams in the world that still do not have a ticket. The United States also has a place automatically as the host nation.

In simple terms, 12 teams will make the women’s volleyball tournament at Los Angeles 2028: the host, five continental champions, three teams from the 2027 World Championship and three teams based on world ranking.

For Thailand, the Asian Championship win means the Olympic race is already over. The team has its place in Los Angeles.

A Place on the Olympic Stage

That history makes the result especially important. Thailand had pushed for a place at London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, but never made the final step.

Thailand is now the third women’s volleyball team after the United States and Canada to earn a spot at Los Angeles 2028, a major first for Thai volleyball after years of waiting.

The team was led by head coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai, with captain Pornpun “Chompoo” Guedpard joined by Pimpichaya “Beem” Kokram, Chatchu-on “Bumbim” Moksri, Thatdao “Nan” Nuekjang, Kaewkalaya “Thip” Kamulthala and Sasipapron “Omsin” Janthawisut. Piyanut Pannoy took the libero role.
