Lego has introduced a new addition to its Art series: a brick-built homage to Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss. Launching 4 August for around THB 10,000, the 4,000-plus piece kit stands 60 cm tall and 54 cm wide, making it the largest Lego Art release yet, while staying true to the painting’s oversized presence.
Partnering with the Belvedere Museum – home to the original painting since 1908 – Lego captures Klimt’s Art Nouveau aesthetic; influences from Eastern art and Byzantine mosaics come through in gold, silver and platinum bricks, a hallmark of his Golden Period. The set retains that flat, gilded backdrop, drawing focus to the physical closeness of the lovers whose robes drop away to a flower-filled meadow.
Once decried as pornographic following the fin de siècle, The Kiss is now celebrated as a cornerstone of the Vienna Secession movement. Taking aim at the conservative establishment, the movement pushed for the liberation of artistic style, and in Klimt’s case, eroticism. This shift ran parallel to another revolution in the understanding of sexuality: the psychoanalytic revolution led by Klimt’s contemporary Sigmund Freud.
Klimt joins a growing gallery of Lego sets, including Van Gogh’s The Starry Night and Sunflowers, Keith Haring’s dancing figures, Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa and Monet’s Water Lilies. Ready for display in a living room or hallway, this latest build offers a reminder of the power of love with a fun Lego touch.
