The fashion world was taken by surprise at the start of 2026 following reports that the legendary Italian designer Valentino Garavani, founder of the Valentino fashion house, passed away peacefully at his private residence in Rome at the age of 93.
Valentino was recognised as one of the key figures in modern fashion. His designs were known for clean lines, careful tailoring and a clear sense of elegance. He was also closely linked to the colour Valentino Red, which became a defining feature of the brand and remains widely associated with his name.
Valentino’s work focused strongly on women’s wear, with frequent use of bows, lace, embroidery and layered fabrics arranged in a precise and controlled way. Over the years, his designs were worn by many well-known figures, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Sophia Loren, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston. He also appeared briefly in the film The Devil Wears Prada, highlighting his status within the fashion world.

Although he retired from designing in 2008, the principles he established remain visible within the Valentino label. His death marks the passing of one of fashion’s most influential designers, whose work remains widely recognised and respected.
