Review

Zuma, the brainchild of chef Rainer Becker, is renowned the world over. Launched in 2002 in London, and now with over twenty outlets worldwide, it offers informal izakaya style Japanese dining, dishes designed for sharing and without formal protocol. Begin with crunchy, yet succulent, tiger prawn tempura presented with an eye on stylish detail to match the decor. Celebrated signature mains include black cod with miso wrapped in hoba leaf, the benchmark on which others are judged. Ribeye with wafu sauce and garlic chips remains a standard which many aspire to replicate. Wood roasted baby chicken will not disappoint, the skin slightly charred, the meat meltingly juicy. The wide offering of sushi, sashimi and maki rolls is stellar quality, the most popular is invariably chu-toro, o-toro and an evolved and elevated take on the much maligned California roll with fresh crab meat and tobiko. Desserts include nods to the restaurant's Asian origins with mango and young coconut custard with passion fruit froth, and again the signatures are favourites, Hokkaido style cheesecake with strawberry sorbet and the chocolate cake are legends. The global wine list encompasses a separate section for premium wines by glass and the sakes offer much to choose from. The outdoor area and stylish indoor bar are great places to unwind before or after dinner.

Midweek Lunch Indulgences: You’ve Earned It So Treat Yourself at These Top-Rated Restaurants

Treat yourself midweek to French bistro delights, contemporary Japanese donburi and elevated Catalan cuisine.

Koktail handpicks some of our favourite restaurants’ new lunch menus. Here are three that we recommend if you think you have worked hard enough to earn a little midweek pat on the back.

Gaston French Bistro

Gaston Bistro introduces Le Comptoir du Chef, also known as the Chef’s counter to their menu. With a selection of dishes perfect for casual group sharing, the Chef’s counter encourages sharing of favourite little treats – just like they do in France. Located at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, the restaurant creates an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a classic Parisian bistro. French chef David Senia works with a medley of quality imported and local ingredients, resulting in hearty bistro fare including a mini wagyu beef burger using Australian Wagyu accompanied by a homemade brioche bun, classic french dishes like duck rillette, traditional croque monsieur and more. The menu also offers French inspired mocktails such as d’Agrumes, Pomme Basilic, and Punch aux Baies along with diverse cocktail selections.

Gaston french Bistro, Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok
Open Monday – Friday, 5.30 – 10.30 p.m and Saturday – Sunday, 11.30 a.m – 2.30 p.m, 5.30 – 10.30 p.m

Zuma

Contemporary Japanese izakaya style takes a donburi twist with Zuma’s new lunch time menu. Set in the St. Regis Bangkok hotel, Zuma blends modern design with traditional Japanese elements. Headed by chef Cinzia Pernici, the menu is tailored for individual enjoyment for those who are short on time but big on quality. Diners can select two starters and a main course from a variety of Zuma dishes like yakitori and white shrimp tempura. Choices of donburi include spicy beef, salmon teriyaki, black cod, and chilean sea bass, all remodelled to be served on top of steamed rice. The menu also introduces the new shogayaki chicken donburi along with a vegetarian option, tofu donburi with spicy miso, hailed by chef Cinzia as the perfect combination of nicely, smooth and juicy.
