Review

Yukinoya sits within Anantara Rasananda Villas on Koh Phangan. The Japanese kitchen is presided over by Chef Rerngchai Pankao (Chef Au) who will undoubtedly engage you. Whether seated at the smart sushi counter or a comfortable table, this will be a theatrical and memorable experience. There is an extensive a la carte menu offering a tempting range of zensai, or appetisers, nigiri, sashimi, tempura and the signature teppanyaki. However, the go-to here is to leave it up to chef Au and inform the service team of your wish for "omakase." Within this smartly themed restaurant, chef Au will deliver the best of the day. Begin with a selection of makimono, hand rolls, with eel or shrimp, followed by a range of sashimi, including hamachi and akami. A stand out tempura of foie gras with miso mustard and caviar is ethereal in texture. Teppanyaki here is second to none, whether Kurobuta pork, Murugai mussels or US scallops, they are executed to perfection. But the star is Saga wagyu striploin A4, a masterpiece. Desserts include a show stopping teppanyaki pineapple accompanied with super smooth quenelle of local herb ice cream. Whilst the wine list is global with some Thai gems, the route to go is the excellent sakes, available by both glass and flask.
