At chic Sukhumvit eatery Tony's, the first independent outlet by well-travelled chef Anthony Burd, diners are spoilt for choice with a la carte, late night drinks, wine and happy hour menus. Contemporary decor, an open kitchen and a smart terrace out front give it a sophisticated modern metropolitan vibe and yet Burd's fare takes its cue from classic trattoria cooking by way of his Italian-American roots. Freshly-made pastas, artisanal pizzas from a wood-fired oven and great grill offerings populate a busy menu. Whet the appetite with antipasti of crispy fried calamari and baked clams paired with a fantastic caesar salad giving crunch with crispy pancetta and crostini. Next try sorpresine, an exquisite vegetarian dish of egg yolk pasta with a spicy vodka sauce, tomato and Calabrian chilli, or share the signature Bangkok hot pizza made with 72-hour leavened dough and topped with piquant salami, spicy meatballs, mozzarella and pickled chillis. Excellent from the mains selection is eggplant parmigiana with romesco sauce, toasted hazelnut, stracciatella and parmigiana cheeses and basil. To finish try Nutella banana lava cake with hazelnut gelato or end with the chef's special cheese board. The wine list is heavy on Italians, well priced with a great selection available by glass. However, here, try one of the signature cocktails, heady and fun.
