Review

Bangkok is full of venues serving regional Thai cuisine, but it's rare for any to specialise in dishes from Trat - a small coastal province that snakes towards the border with Cambodia. Perhaps it is because of this neglect that this beautiful place is a hit with Thais, tourists and expatriates alike. Indeed, you may struggle to get a table without booking a couple of days in advance. An expansive menu covers numerous bases - including fare from around the nation - but it's the house signatures from Trat that intrigue the most. Familial respect was the foundation stone, with the owners honouring their mother, a hotshot cook, by showcasing her favourite recipes. And they've done the lady proud via both the striking mural depiction of her on the wall and the succession of hits that emerge from the kitchen. Try chamuang leaf curry which combines tender braised pork with delicate sour notes. Also a hit is lon pu kai, a chili dip made with a whole mud crab. Other Trat-derived winners, meanwhile, include savoury stir-fried tiger prawn with garlic, chili, and fish sauce and spicy sea bass soup with salacca and shrimp paste. To accompany the experience, the wine list offers a number of old and new world wines and a selection of Thai craft beers.

Culinary Gems of Thailand Season 2 Ep. 4: Sri Trat

Koktail & Tourism Authority of Thailand

Thailand’s Favourite Restaurants, in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), introduces season 2 of “Culinary Gems of Thailand”, with six new episodes hosted by Natalie Phanphensophon and Nigel Oakins. They venture into the daily lives of some of Thailand’s most loved chefs as they prepare food for their guests based on recipes handed down by generation.

In this episode Nigel is joined by MR Usnisa Sukhsvasti at Sri Trat restaurant in Bangkok. Here owner Wongwich Sripinyoo and his mother and cook, Srirat Sripinyo recreate the essence of Trat province in Bangkok, by preparing dishes from their beloved family recipes. Khun Srirat explains just some of the secrets behind the success of Sri Trat based on a desire to warmly serve guests with authentic Eastern Thai cuisine. The culinary offerings meld ingredients from both the mountain and the sea, fusing the balanced flavours of Thailand’s central part and the spiciness of southern regions. Khun Srirat was once a famed beauty queen and even now, many years after her time on the catwalk, she retains a charmful grace and beauty as she marshals the kitchen staff into shape.
