Nestled in an alley next to Wat Yai Rom in Rama 2, Mr Genki is a Japanese Asian vegetarian restaurant that is reasonably priced, tasty and authentic. The layout is divided into two sections, with one side featuring traditional Japanese-style sunken table settings, exuding warmth and comfort through soft lighting. On the other side, a more conventional table seating arrangement.
Signature appetisers include unagi maki made with fried konjac, topped with sauce, sesame seeds and mayonnaise, the texture only slightly differing from the original eel perfectly encapsulating the traditional unagi flavour further enhanced by wasabi mixed with soy sauce. A must try appetiser is the strawberry avocado maki, a truly unique creation that is refreshing and light. The veggie katsu curry rice steals the show with its mildly spiced curry sauce and crispy vegetarian pork, made from plant-based pork tasting remarkably like the meat version. The combination of tender meaty texture and aromatic curry spices provides for a satisfying meal. For those craving Korean-inspired flavours, “chicken” skewers in Korean sauce, served with kimchi, offers a tangy and spicy experience. Takoyaki lovers can savour the vegetable takoyaki which is something of a rarity, offering a delicious twist on the classic. Beverages are a somewhat limited choice of tea and soft drinks. The peachy oolong fizz and the green tea are the recommended route to go.
The plant-based Japanese dishes are well worth the journey to the Bangkok suburbs.
