Le Coq d'Or has offered traditional French cuisine for forty years. Majestically positioned in meticulously manicured lawns, close to the river bank. As the first fine-dining restaurant in Chiang Mai it is the venue for that special occasion, and is family owned and managed by Khun Achiraya who greets diners on arrival. Dishes rarely change, nor do they need to. Bread is brought on arrival, warm and fluffy with accompanying quenelles of butter. Begin with traditional prawn cocktail or escargots; consistency is the word here. The garlic bread alongside snails, crunchy, juicy and moreish. Asparagus soup with scallops strikes the perfect balance. The main course of choice is steak and the offering includes ribeye, tenderloin, a sleek Japanese Kobe wagyu served with a rich truffle cream sauce and a stunning chateaubriand double fillet with sauce bearnaise. Other main courses of note, a supreme of Norwegian salmon grilled and served with an earthy mushroom risotto, on point and surrounded with a ribbon of bell pepper sauce. There is also a moist and flavourful duck confit complimented with an uber concentrated, fruity, dark cherry sauce. Service is formal and unobtrusive. Desserts will tempt with a hot souffle, expertly executed. The wine list is heavily French with lots of well-priced choice, a few by glass
If the cherries jubilee is in season it does not get much better.
