Arriving at Khao Niao, one feels a warm and relaxing atmosphere. The distinctive layout, features modern box-shaped architecture; the interior adorned in wooden materials and traditional Thai handwoven fabrics transporting diners to the north eastern regions of Isaan. The restaurant is spacious and welcoming, ideal for a family gathering.
The extensive a la carte menu offers dishes of rustic Isaan flavours, laid out with helpful pictures and descriptions. Signature dishes include stir-fried minced pork with dill and Thai herbs "Kaeng Om", which literally bursts with flavour, while retaining the aromatic essence of Lao coriander and Thai basil in its seasoning. Tender and smoky charcoal-grilled pork, marinated in an heirloom sauce is perfectly executed to deliver a succulent texture, and flavour bomb mouthful. Artisan sourced grilled Thai-wagyu oyster blade with pickled egg yolk is noteworthy too. Thai cuisine is never complete without a soup dish and pork bone spicy soup is a definite go to. The bones are simmered for four hours until softened, blending with the spiciness of the soup and the aromatic herbs.
Adjoining Khao Niao sits the Onda cafe, worth a visit for a refreshing drink to complement the Isaan food offerings. Try a mandarin flake, yuzu soda or lychee butterfly soda, all highly recommended.
"Kaeng Om" stir-fried minced pork with dill and Thai herbs is a rare find in Thailand.
