Review

Helmed by executive chef Jesus Pascual, newcomer Japan-lsh takes inspiration from the culinary flavours and tapas traditions of the Iberian Peninsula combined with the refined sensibilities and techniques of Japanese cooking. The rooftop restaurant and bar is outfitted in a contemporary style with soft furnishings predominantly in dramatic red. The young front of house team is smart and on-point while the vibe in the dining room and out on the terrace is cheerfully relaxed. Focus on red of a different kind as you peruse an extensive drinks list that includes a compact but well-chosen wine selection. Also consider a refreshing Isakaya-influenced or Spanish-oriented cocktail before opening with unctuous tsukune moruno, which is tender lberico pork belly seasoned with Andalusian spices and accompanied by sharp pickles. Hot from the robata grillit is a great example of the outlet's Spanish-Japanese fusion fare and goes very well with a plate of delicious signature mushroom croquettes, which are rich earthy bites of delight. From the 'shared' section, and superb if you enjoy the flavours of the deep, is uni ensaladilla with potato, carrot, uni mayo and amachi ikuna. But check out the 'raw' and noodle options for alternatives. Round off an intriguing meal with a dessert of hojicha Basque cheesecake with chocolate ganache and hazelnut ice cream.

Japan-lsh serves the best sangria east of Madrid. Enjoy an iced jug on the rooftop terrace while listening to live music.
