Review

The basement of the Grand Hyatt, where Gaston a chic French bistro is located, holds a special place in most Bangkokians' memories. With Spasso now firmly relegated to the past this latest creation is a breath of fresh air, offering authentic rustic cuisine in a cosy and elegant setting. The furnishings, logo and menus a distinctive crimson reminiscent of a Parisian neighbourhood eatery. Starched tablecloths and napkins add more style. Upon seating, one is brought complimentary bread, butter, pissaladiere and a mini platter of sliced meat, radish and tomatoes, perfectly setting the scene. The a la carte menu provides lots of choice including a well-priced set "formule" of green salad, entrecote, with the option of cafe de Paris butter or peppercorn sauce, free flow French fries and a caramelised cheese tart. Other entrees include plump escargots in herb butter, or a slightly decadent lobe of pan-fried foie gras with fig chutney and a fluffy brioche. Follow with a luxe lobster, gratinated in a rich bisque or a deliciously melt in the mouth wagyu oyster blade, beef bourguignon. A blackboard, lists daily specials of super popular oysters, classically accompanied with piquant mignonette. Desserts continue the theme, the crepes suzette, a perfect ending. The wine list is exclusively French with several regional gems.

Need to know

The blackboard dish of the day is invariably wow; on occasion an unforgettable calamari stuffed with pork.

Midweek Lunch Indulgences: You’ve Earned It So Treat Yourself at These Top-Rated Restaurants

Treat yourself midweek to French bistro delights, contemporary Japanese donburi and elevated Catalan cuisine.

Koktail handpicks some of our favourite restaurants’ new lunch menus. Here are three that we recommend if you think you have worked hard enough to earn a little midweek pat on the back.

Gaston French Bistro

Gaston Bistro introduces Le Comptoir du Chef, also known as the Chef’s counter to their menu. With a selection of dishes perfect for casual group sharing, the Chef’s counter encourages sharing of favourite little treats – just like they do in France. Located at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, the restaurant creates an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a classic Parisian bistro. French chef David Senia works with a medley of quality imported and local ingredients, resulting in hearty bistro fare including a mini wagyu beef burger using Australian Wagyu accompanied by a homemade brioche bun, classic french dishes like duck rillette, traditional croque monsieur and more. The menu also offers French inspired mocktails such as d’Agrumes, Pomme Basilic, and Punch aux Baies along with diverse cocktail selections.
