Bangkok’s glitzy blend of high-rise architecture and neon-infused hyper-activity is best appreciated from an elevated vantage point, and there are few better places to take in the view than Bar.Yard, on the 40th-floor of the Kimpton Maa-Lai. Bar.Yard is pleasingly casual, making it a favourite for regulars and visitors alike. A laid-back ethos is apparent in a menu with an emphasis on American-style barbecue, plentiful Latin twists, and sharing combos and platters. Chefs ally skill and flair to the straightforward food offerings. Lobster and shrimp ceviche supply plentiful zing courtesy of fresh aguachile verde and kaffir lime leaves. Tuna and salmon tartare combined with mustard, shallots, and guacamole and accompanied with rocket and chipotle aioli is exemplary. Other “keep it simple but make it great” examples are taco offerings like quesabirria lamb and lengua, slow-braised beef tongue with tomatillo salsa and a variety of quesadillas, including an option with truffled vegan cheese, kalamata olives, portobello mushroom, spinach and sun-dried tomatoes. More substantial plates include rib-eye churrasco - 250g of 150-day grass-fed hickory-smoked black Angus beef and char-grilled achiote marinaded octopus, with roasted pineapple and mango relish also hits the spot. For dessert choose from tropical banana and coconut chimichangas or gianduja chocolate s’mores. Select drinks from a lengthy list of bespoke tiki-style cocktails, slushies and mules or mocktails.
