Review

Baan Daeng opened last year, a less formal version of its grand and accoladed parent, Methavalai Sorndaeng. This new kid on the block is found in the trendy Chula district, the interior is simple and furnished in a rustic style, with a buzzy and fun ambience. The extensive menu is dotted with traditional Thai classic recipes, each one authentically reproduced and perfectly executed. This is Thai home cooking at its best, dishes are flavourful and comforting. Choosing what to order is helpfully assisted with photos. Begin with one of the delicious appetisers or salads, deep-fried shrimp cakes or spicy beef cheek salad; you will not be disappointed.

Alternatively, take the easy route and order the mixed appetiser platter, giving the diner a recommended selection of the best on offer. Soups, are strongly recommended with both clear and creamy versions of tom yum to choose from. Main courses are sub-divided into a wide choice of seafood or meat dishes and curries, including a comprehensive number of vegetarian options. There are also several western dishes with a Thai twist. Leave room for dessert as one may choose either black sesame dumplings or the favourite, mango sticky rice. Drinks wise, accompany your chosen dishes with a creative mocktail, a fresh fruit juice or smoothie.
