Located at the entrance to Boat Avenue, Cherngtalay's lively shopping and dining district, Anise Tapas Bar & Grill serves up international tapas and is one of few establishments in Phuket to do it - and do it well. The restaurant is unpretentious though sophisticated in its decor. Whether arriving for lunch or dinner, expect a warm welcome at the bar. Take a seat there before dining and choose from the menu of wines and cocktails, or combine the two with a sangria. The signature Anise sangria - a refreshing mix of Cava, brandy, fresh mango and apple is the perfect start for the meal ahead. Salted padron peppers, patatas bravas, succulent gambas in white wine and garlic - Anise's tapas menu features all the quintessential dishes you would hope to see. Also offered are dishes with Asian touches, including fried tofu with yamasa sauce, shrimp croquettes, and a secret-recipe spicy Thai sauce that accompanies the chicken wings. It wouldn't be a visit to Anise without paella, self-proclaimed as best on the island. With four variations in four different sizes, it's a stand-out dish, Valenciana-style chicken and chorizo in particular offering a deliciously traditional smokey flavour. Salads, pastas, pizzas, meats and tacos are also on offer. It's easy to see how Anise manages to earn its stripes.
