Review

Al Saray offers a warm and inviting ambience in this latest branch in Sathorn. The menu continues Lebanese-born chef Madhi and Indian-born chef Sam’s culinary mission to deliver traditional dishes from both cuisines. Begin with fattouch, crunchy marinated vegetables with tangy and earthy sumac, crispy bread and pomegranate molasses. Hummus comes in many forms, each a perfect blend of luscious chickpeas, the original with tahini and lemon juice, others including parsley and cumin or a favourite of walnut and figs. Pani puri is presented with a duo of juices, beetroot and mint. The main dishes of butter chicken and lamb shank vindaloo deliver familiar, comforting flavours, and are perfectly executed. Stellar accompaniments of dahl, yellow Arhar lentils in a creamy tomato gravy are accompanied by naan and paratha breads, baked to order. Lebanese mains of lamb and chicken kofta arrive grilled, ever so slightly charred, accompanied by a selection of seasonal vegetables. Hidden within the menu are gems, including a nod to Lebanon’s French roots, with highly recommended shrimps à la Provençal or, in a similar style, spicy chicken wings. Desserts include a rose water scented mohalabieh milk pudding and a trio of flavoured kulfis, mango, pistachio and coconut. Al Saray offers a selection of Lebanese and Indian wines to complement and a range of fruity mocktails.
