As the creative director of his successful eponymous label, Wisharawish has given local textiles a contemporary vocabulary that is young and casual but also edgy with an emphasis on simple, tailored forms and geometric shapes. He focuses not only on design but also on traditional wisdoms and culture, contemplating the abstract and translating its essence into material form through technical experiment. He also acts as a bridge between local cottage industries and global business, bringing sustainability into a contemporary context. The Chulalongkorn Faculty of Arts and Institut Francais De La Mode graduate’s breakthrough was winning the Mango Fashion Awards in 2012. His foray into government service helped him see the potential of Thai textiles, which became his identity when he struck out on his own. He has had a good year, with several shows at Tokyo Fashion Week in collaboration with textiles suppliers from all over Thailand. When he’s not in his atelier you’ll likely find him gardening or cooking, probably with Philip Glass’ track Einstein On The Beach playing in the background.
