‘The World of Tim Burton’ Travels to Malaysia

Get up close and personal with the most eccentric director in Hollywood’s twisted output

Southeast Asian fans will be thrilled to learn that Tim Burton will bring his exhibition, titled The World of Tim Burton, to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from March 21st to July 30th.

Guided by movies on television, comics in the newspapers, and myths and fables told in school, Burton began incorporating lifelong influences into his art at an early age. The three-month exhibition event draws from the director’s entire personal archive, showing his creative output from childhood to the present day. Fans will get to immerse themselves in 500 drawings, paintings, photographs, sketchbooks, moving-image works, and sculptural installations from Tim Burton’s unique world.

The artist is deeply influenced by expressionism, which is reflected in his gothic, fantasy, cinematic, and horror films. Some of his most iconic works include Edward Scissorhands (1990), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010), Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016), and the latest Netflix phenomenon, Wednesday (2022).

According to the website, “The exhibition reveals an inimitable style that is informed by Burton’s specific perspective. His amalgamations of man, animal, and machine are evocative of an artistically-inclined Dr. Frankenstein with an unfettered imagination. The interplay between horror and humor figures prominently in Burton’s art and films and this theme of the “carnivalesque”—the mixture between comedy and the grotesque—is seen in projects from Batman to Alice in Wonderland.”

The World of Tim Burton is an event you won’t want to skip if you love any of the director’s famed aesthetics, works, or ideas.
